Experience That Counts

Mr. Carothers is the owner and lead counsel at Carothers and Carothers. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Michigan State University with a B.S.E.E. in 1962. Mr. Carothers received his JD from Duquesne University in 1965, and that same year he was admitted to the Pennsylvania Bar, U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania. Additionally, Mr. Carothers is registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
Carothers and Carothers represent three generations of expertise in intellectual property law, starting in the late 1800s with Floyd N. Barber who was an original charter member of the Pittsburgh Intellectual Property Law Association. Mr. Carothers' father, William D. Carothers, joined his father-in-law's, Floyd N. Barber, practice. Mr. Floyd B. Carothers joined the firm in 1962 and he has been in the position of owner since 1972. Mr. Carothers received the highest rating possible from Martindale Hubble, the premier publisher of a worldwide attorney directory.

Clients

Carothers and Carothers mostly represent corporate concerns, however approximately 40% of our clients are individuals. We have also provided representation to successful local business in their startup on intellectual property matters, such as Respironics. Mr. Carothers has business experience with other startup companies, such as Black Box®, wherein he was initial incorporator, stockholder and served as corporate secretary and intellectual property counsel.

Overseas Corporate Concerns

Carothers and Carothers overseas corporate work experience includes Sumitomo Electric Industries, Ltd. of Osaka, Japan and Ulvac, Inc. of Japan in the preparation, filing and prosecution of patent applications in the United States and on advisement regarding infringement matters.
We also worked with Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. of Osaka, Japan (PANASONIC) on the vast portion of their United States trademark matters, including preparation and filing of trademark applications and conducting trademark opposition and cancellation proceedings in the 1960s, '70s and '80s.
